Does VXDIAG VCX SE Work with Subaru FreeSSM?

FreeSSM is a free and easy to use diagnostic and adjustment tool for SUBARU vehicles. It provides access to the engine and transmission control units of the models Legacy/Liberty, Outback, Baja, Impreza, Forester and Tribeca (not before MY1999). 1.2.5 version is the latest. Possible to use the FREESSM software with VXDIAG VCX SE?

vxdiag vcx se subaru

The answer is NO. The best cable for FreeSSM is the cheap $10-$20 VAG-COM KKL 409.1 OBD2 USB cable. It is a cheap cable with FTDI chip.

vag kkl cable

VXDIAG VCX SE does not work with the FreeSSM software. VCX SE only works with SSM3 and SSM4 software.  vag-com is not going to work SSM3/SSM4 software. SSM requires J2534 standard compliant adapter.  vxdiag is j2523 compliant – vxdiag can be used instead of openport cable.  Vxdiag vcx se Subaru works well with ssm3 and ssm4 the vcx se also has a wired cable you can use.

Check: FreeSSM vs SSM3

Neither FreeSSM nor Romraider will connect to the modules in a 2021 Subarus. only some earlier models are supported.
So you have better keep both VXDIAG SSM3/SSM4 and FreeSSM.

VXDIAG SSM4 Program 2017 Subaru BRZ Key Fob

VXDIAG Subaru SSM4 review: programming/copying Subaru BRZ key for cheap.

VXDIAG SSM4 Program 2017 Subaru BRZ Key Fob

User report:

‘I just want to let you guys know that you can pretty much program a new key fob for the win.
In my experience, I was able to program a new Key fob for my 2017 BRZ using SSM4 and getting a CLEAN [virgin] key fob from eBay.
Again, it has to be a key fob that is ready to be programmed. Any used key fob already programmed with an existing vehicle WILL not work until it’s dis-virgin as long as the key fob FCC ID matches your existing one.
In my case the FCC for my key fob is HYQ14AHC. you can find that at the back of the key fob.
So any Subaru key fob works as long as it matches the FC ID – it’s interchangeable between Subaru vehicles.
All you need is a copy of :
1. SSM4 (depending on the copy you get you might need additional software to be able to use it )
2. VXDIAG VCX SE Subaru scanner (or of the J2534 certified dongle)
3. and of course a virgin keyless entry FOB matching your existing FCC ID fob’

Fix SRVD Disabled on Subaru Outback by VXDIAG SSM3

This post helped to save me a ton of money.

Fixed Subaru Outback 2015 SRVD Disabled Issue without the Dealer

My wife’s 2015 Outback started getting the SRVD disabled warning light about a month back. When I read of the steps you took, I seriously considered buying a VXDiag and hunting down a set of radar reflectors. While I could find the VXDiag vcx se subaru, I couldn’t find a good source for the radar reflectors. Instead of getting two replacements, I ordered a single 87611AL00B off of eBay for $92 (w/shipping). The original parts were 87611AL00A also available on eBay for a few bucks less, but I figured the newer model might be more reliable.

I watched a couple YouTube videos on how to remove the tail lights and bumper. They noted that I’d likely break some of the fender clips, so I went to Amazon and ordered a set that included a handy trim remover tool (Dr.Roc Subaru Replacement Bumper Fender Clips Set) for $17–it really came in handy, as I did break a couple of the clips.

The mud flaps were a bit of a challenge, but a small offset screwdriver took care of the one screw with low clearance, so I didn’t need to remove the tires. Fortunately, I found that I didn’t need to fully remove the bumper. Once I pulled it back enough, there was enough room to reach in to unscrew and replace the RADAR units. I replaced the back right with the eBay unit and turned the car on. Nope, still got the SRVD disabled warning. I put the old unity back on and then tried the eBay unit on the left side. When I turned the car back on, lo and behold, no more SRVD Disabled warning! And yup, SRVD is back to working like normal! Overall, it took me about an hour to go through the whole process.

So, for those who stumble upon this thread and are experiencing this dreaded SRVD Disabled problem, I suggest these steps to resolve it:
1) Lie down under your bumper, find the RADAR units on either side (black boxes, a bit larger than a deck of cards) and see if you can reach up and disconnect/reconnect the harness to see if that works, as IdahoPat noted above. It didn’t work for me, but you might get lucky and you’ll fix the problem for free
2) Order a single 87611AL00A or 87611AL00B off of eBay and try swapping it in on either side to see if you get lucky like me and find that only one of yours has failed (likely). Note, it’s the same part for both sides and yes, you can mix the old and new part numbers.
3) If that doesn’t work, you may have gotten a bum one from eBay. Consider ordering another and giving it a try. It’ll still be cheaper than the next two options
4) Do all of the steps that original post did. It’ll cost you, but you’ll get a cool VXDiag to play with out of the deal.

Subaru outback 2015 – SRVD disabled (bumped into a pole, got a small dent on the rear passenger side bumper). Fixed the dent.

Steps taken so far:
1. Took out the bumper, bought a sensor part 87611AL00A of eBay, replaced the sensor – passenger side.
2. SRVD disabled sign was gone for 15 minutes, drive around those 15 minutes to see if blind spot detection works, it worked but then conked off again.

VXDIAG VCX SE Subaru Forester 2016 Review

Here’s new Subaru scanner feedback and review from one of our customers.

I have a working bi-directional scan/diagnostic tool.  The device is a VXDIAG VCX SE model, made by Allscanner, a Chinese company and it was purchased from vxdiagshop.com. I chose a Toyota and Honda “license” for it as well. Total including shipping from China, was just under $250.  The Autel I looked at had very limited bi-directional support for Subaru; mostly “read-only”. So i decided to get this vxdiag.

It works on Subaru with a copy of SSM3/SSM4. The SSM “Patch” provided doesn’t appear to work with Win10; I’ll try win7 later. I like Win7 way better than Win10 in any event.

The SSM4 will connect to my 2016 Forester, and it is bi-directional; the only thing I have done so far is activate the horn, and work the door locks, but for that to happen, it has to be talking to the cars CANBUS, and working is working. SSM4 is not at all intuitive to use, and there doesn’t appear to be anything like an instruction manual available for it, so be prepared for a steep learning curve.

I haven’t tried the Techstream/Honda software with the VXDIAG device yet, but the TIS v.7 I have on another box works just fine, and it isn’t real difficult to learn.

I was able to put Windows7 on the Win10 laptop. It wasn’t trivial, but it did activate.
I was able to install the SSM3/SSM4/VXDIAG_Manager software, and the “Patch” works as advertised under Win7.
I was able to connect to the Forry, run assorted diagnostics, see “live” parametric data, etc. I found the instruction manuals for the SSM* software, and I guess I’ll have to RTFM at some point.
All good, but randomly when trying to connect, the car CANBUS has a fit about something. The instrument panel lights up like a Christmas Tree, the VXDIAG refuses to connect, and after shutting down and disconnecting everything, the car has the CEL on when re-started. A generic OBDII scanner finds the following DTCs:
U0101, U0122, U0073, U0155.
All CANBUS “communication” errors. The scanner will clear these DTCs, but they are listed as “permanent”, and they come right back. Driving the car a bit does clear them, and then the VXDIAG device will connect again. I pulled the car OBD connector loose, and gave it a good once-over; it looked fine.

$250 is a very nice price compared to sourcing an official tool from Subaru (~$3,000 for the Denso device, plus $1500/yr subscription for SSM software :p).
